I recently Tweeted an announcement of a new website we built using Joomla! and Nooku Content. You can read the original Tweet here: JoeJoomla Announces New Joomla / Nooku Site. After Tweeting it I got a direct message back from someone saying they never heard of Nooku. I suspect there are lots of people who use Joomla! and are not familiar with Nooku. Even if you heard of it you might be confused between the differences between Nooku Framework and Nooku Content. Let's bring this into the light and look at it closer.
Who is Nooku?
Nooku.org explains that "Nooku is a team of experienced software architects lead by Johan Janssens."
I've had the pleasure of talking to Johan on Skype a few times and found him to be very articulate and passionate about what he does. He is intimate with the workings of Joomla! 1.5 because he is a co-founder of Joomla, and also held the role of Lead Developer and Project Manager during the development of Joomla 1.5. During one of our conversations Johan offered to enhance something on one of my websites. He was simply going to go right in and code a cool functionality with a menu module for me on the fly. When I asked him how he could simply dive in there and just do it he replied 'code is poetry'. He's just so talented and gifted and loves this stuff so much that he can just jump in and create things with code. The results of what he did made me look like a superhero.
Nooku is not just Johan Janssens. Nooku came into being through a group of partners from businesses, governmental agencies and non-profit organizations that helped fund its development. The partners contributed to the growth of this Open Source project and today there are several top notch developers who work on a weekly basis for Nooku.
What does the name 'Nooku' mean?
The Joomla! world has a love affair with Swahili words. Joomla! itself is derived from the Swahili word “Jumla” meaning “all together” or “as a whole”. Nooku is from the Swahili word “Nuku”, which means both “content” and “translation”. The genesis of Nooku began with the open source Nooku Content project for multilingual management of Joomla! websites.
What is Nooku Content?
Nooku Content is based on the Nooku Framework called "Koowa" which is another Swahili name that means “growing”. Nooku Content manages the multiple languages required for some Joomla! websites and aims to become the leading multi-language and content solution for Joomla. JoeJoomla uses Nooku Content on all of our Joomla! 1.5 sites requiring multiple languages. We have found it to be the top solution for this purpose. The Nooku support is exemplary. You want the best team possible behind your Joomla! projects and it doesn't get any better than with Johan and his Nooku partners and developers along side you. We're thrilled to have been able to get on board early with Nooku Content.
What is Nooku Framework?
While Nooku Content is only distributed among paying partners in a partner programme, Nooku Framework is free and open source software (FOSS). Nooku Framework is a rapid application development framework which provides a solid architecture that can be used by third party developers to quickly build great Joomla! extensions. With Nooku Framework developers are reusing common programming code. This speeds development time by reducing the amount of code developers need to write. The parts handled by the framework have already been used and tested and are usually problem free. Developers using the Nooku Framework are more likely to adhere to coding conventions and standards which makes for better end products. If you are looking for more information on Nooku Framework you can find it HERE.
What's Next For Nooku?
The Nooku team is busy as can be brewing up more advancements. Expect to see "Nooku Server" soon. Nooku Server will be a multi-lingual Joomla distribution based on Joomla 1.5.x. and will include Nooku Framework and the core of the Nooku Content technology. Partners in the Nooku program will enjoy advanced features that currently exist in Nooku Content in the form of a professional version of Nooku Server. Nooku Server should be released early in the fourth quarter of 2010. Keep your eyes open and ears peeled for more information forthcoming about Nooku Server. If you are involved in creating multilingual sites and you want more information on the Nooku partner programme you can find it here: Nooku Partnership Program. Don't forget to tell them that JoeJoomla sent you!
