Joomla! has been involved in Google's Summer of Code event for the last several years. This year Joomla! didn't make the list of approved projects. A lot of disappointment was expressed by many when the list of open source projects to be involved was published and Joomla! was not on it. There was some angry finger pointing, and from others philosophical explanations, to explain why this might have happened.
I was excited about GSoC for the first time since I agreed to be a mentor this year for a student. I haven't been involved with GSoC in the past in any capacity and finally when I decided get involved, there is no GSoC. I felt the let down personally. It's easy to be disappointed but maybe the rejection of Joomla! for inclusion in the 2010 GSoC is a blessing in disguise.
Rather than licking their wounds, packing it up and moving on, some want to birth something from the rejection instead
Some of the email feedback from the students and others in the Joomla! community after the Google announcement is very exciting. A momentum is building to do something that hasn't been done before. People are suggesting that we proceed with a few of the ideas that were being proposed for the GSoC and do it as a volunteer project inside the Joomla! community.
People with the kind of 'we don't give up so easy' attitude are made out of the same stuff that champions come from
A new initiative inside the project such as this will require leadership, new ideas, organization, and co-operation. This is a great opportunity for people that might not have otherwise come together. I say bravo for such enthusiasm. This has the potential to produce something very worthwhile on an annual basis for the Joomla! community. We may be seeing some bright new future leaders in the making here.
