Following Your Instructions Just Worked!
As a unix newbie, I could make NO sense out of any of the documentation from the Joomla site, and was too scared to make changes using a vi editor from an xterm window. And no clue about apache, mysql, or php.

Luckily, I stumbled upon MAMP.  The logical conclusion: google joomla and MAMP.

Viola. Your site was clear, CORRECT, and following your instructions JUST WORKED.  THE FIRST TIME.
